Dumping Bait in the Woods Habituates Bears to Humans and Grows Their Population

(June 10, 2014) – Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting is calling on the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to put an end to bear baiting – an unsporting practice where piles of rotting meat, pizza and stale pastries lure bears in for an easy trophy kill – to prevent future human and bear conflicts.

(March 25, 2014) – The Maine legislature has again failed to enact long-overdue protections for Maine's bears. Lawmakers chose to "indefinitely postpone" discussion on the cruel and unsporting practices of hounding, baiting and trapping after the Secretary of State certified a ballot initiative. The issue will now appear on the statewide ballot in the November 2014, giving all Maine voters an opportunity to decide.

Secretary of State Certifies Signatures

(March 5, 2014) – The Maine Secretary of State certified 63,626 signatures, giving voters an opportunity to end the cruel and unsporting practices of bear hounding, baiting and trapping in Maine. A question on the issue will appear on the November 2014 ballot. Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting -- the broad coalition leading the effort to end Maine’s status as the last state to allow all three practices -- submitted 78,528 signatures to the Secretary of State’s office in early February. The signatures collected came from 417 cities and towns, in every county throughout Maine.

(Feb. 3, 2014) – Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting—a coalition working to end the cruel and unsporting practices of bear hounding, baiting and trapping—submitted 78,528 signatures to the Secretary of State’s office, that, when certified, will give Mainers the opportunity to decide the issue at the ballot box in November 2014. During just 121 days, the coalition surpassed the 57,277 signatures needed to qualify for the ballot by more than 37 percent, and collected signatures from 417 cities and towns, in every county throughout Maine.

(Aug. 26, 2013) – August 26 marks the start of bear hunting season in Maine and as global pop icon Ke$ha prepares for her August 30 show on the Bangor waterfront, she announced her support for Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting and their statewide campaign to put an end to the practices of bear hounding, baiting and trapping in Maine. Maine Bear Hunting Reform Narrowly Rejected by Voters

Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting expressed disappointment about the election results on Question 1, but thanked more than a quarter million Mainers who voted to end bear baiting, hounding, and trapping.

"We are grateful to so many Maine voters for supporting this proposed reform, and we look forward to working with them and with ‘no’ and non-voters to outlaw the practices of bear hounding and trapping, because we believe there’s substantial agreement on that issue."
