Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting

David Rockefeller Jr. Endorses Yes on Question 1

David Rockefeller Jr., a well-known philanthropist, announced his support of the Yes on Question 1 campaign. He joins Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting, the group urging a Yes vote on Question 1, in its efforts to ban the cruel and unsporting practices of bear baiting, hounding and trapping. He offered the following statement:

"Maine is the only state that permits all three practices of trapping, hounding and baiting bears for sport. It’s not fair chase hunting and the suffering of animals isn’t necessary.  We were the first state to adopt an anti-cruelty law.  It’s time we put best practices back into play.”

Katie Hansberry, campaign director for Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting said, “We’re grateful to David for standing with Mainers who believe it’s cruel and unnecessary to kill bears with junk food, leg-hold snare traps and packs of dogs with radio collars. We encourage all Mainers who want to stop this cruelty to take David’s advice and vote Yes on Question 1 on November 4.”

Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting is a coalition of state and national groups, environmental and animal organizations, animal shelters and rescue groups, hunters, veterinarians, businesses, community and faith leaders and independent biologists.

Maine Bear Hunting Reform Narrowly Rejected by Voters

Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting expressed disappointment about the election results on Question 1, but thanked more than a quarter million Mainers who voted to end bear baiting, hounding, and trapping.

"We are grateful to so many Maine voters for supporting this proposed reform, and we look forward to working with them and with ‘no’ and non-voters to outlaw the practices of bear hounding and trapping, because we believe there’s substantial agreement on that issue."
