(Nov. 5, 2014) – Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting expressed disappointment about the election results on Question 1, but thanked more than a quarter million Mainers who voted to end bear baiting, hounding, and trapping. It was the second time in 10 years that voters have narrowly rejected this set of reforms clustered into a single ballot initiative.

(Nov. 3, 2014)  – The Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices denied a request to investigate the Maine Wildlife Conservation Council’s nondisclosure of campaign contributions from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Katie Hansberry, campaign director for Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting, issued the following statement:

The bears in Maine eat better than those in most states, but it's not necessarily good for them.

Donuts, pizza and other tempting treats are commonly used by hunters in the Pine Tree State to bait the animals, luring them out of the woods and into an open area where they can be shot.

Though the practice is legal right now, that could change Tuesday, when voters weigh in on a proposition that would forbid bear baiting and two other popular hunting practices.

Tomorrow, voters in Maine and Michigan will decide ballot measures with life-and-death significance for black bears and gray wolves.

Nov 03, 2014

On Tuesday, Maine voters will decide how best to hunt the growing black bear population.

Nov 02, 2014

Hunting writer Marc Folco continues to see the world only through orange-tinted glasses, rebuking The Humane Society of the United States for supporting a Maine ballot measure to ban bear baiting, trapping and hounding. Given that Maine is the only state in the nation to allow these unsporting and inhumane hunting methods, should this stance and determined work by The HSUS surprise anyone?

Nov 01, 2014

Depending on Maine legislators to take action overlooks their allegiance to the hunting community.

In “Our View: Bear-baiting case not made: We say ‘no on Question 1″ (Oct. 19), you wrongly conclude there’s no good argument for banning recreational bear baiting, hounding and trapping.

Nov 01, 2014

Question 1 doesn’t seek to end the Maine tradition of hunting – it aims to restore the fair-chase component and maintain hunting as a sport, not a mousetrap.

TV ads by the “No on 1″ camp, featuring Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife employees, claim that passing Question 1 could be a threat to our public safety. Yet they offer no factual evidence of an increase in bear-related attacks or confrontations.

I spent the better part of the last 50 years in Jackman. My mother was born there in 1935. My grandfather was born there in 1893. When I was very young, bears were as common as any other wild animal. The trash dumps, the restaurant dumpsters were full of food, trash cans were allowed everywhere. Bears were a part of the town’s culture.

When I was 9, a moose attacked a car. When I was 18, a moose killed a person. When I was 26, a moose-car collision killed a young person from town. How many people have been killed in Maine by bears?

Nov 01, 2014

An ethics complaint has been filed against the the principal committee that opposes the ban on bear baiting, according to Jonathan Wayne, executive director of Maine’s Ethics Commission.

(Nov. 1, 2014) – Yes! On 1 released new online videos highlighting the indefensible practices that the IF&W are supporting – the cruel methods of trapping, baiting and hounding – and debunking the false scare tactics the opponents of Question 1 are using.

Nov 01, 2014

During the last seven years, I’ve been venturing into Maine’s northern forest with my camera and journal at my side. This wilderness flows through my veins. I explore these woods to study and photograph wildlife, including the black bear, and do so without using bait, traps or dogs. I choose not to use these unethical techniques out of respect for the wildlife.

I’ve been involved in dozens of political campaigns around the country over two decades, and the brazen lies and scare tactics used by state officials working in collusion with the bear baiting, hounding, and trapping crowd in Maine are among the worst I’ve ever seen.

I am a lifelong hunter of French Canadian descent. I strongly support Question 1 to end the baiting, hounding and trapping of Maine’s bears. Here is why:

At least since President Theodore Roosevelt vastly expanded the national forest system and a range of other public lands for use by the masses, hunters have recognized their important role as good stewards of the wildlife resources all of us share, both hunters and non-hunters.

Maine Bear Hunting Reform Narrowly Rejected by Voters

Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting expressed disappointment about the election results on Question 1, but thanked more than a quarter million Mainers who voted to end bear baiting, hounding, and trapping.

"We are grateful to so many Maine voters for supporting this proposed reform, and we look forward to working with them and with ‘no’ and non-voters to outlaw the practices of bear hounding and trapping, because we believe there’s substantial agreement on that issue."
